Arsenal have received £10 million from the sale of goalkeeper Matt Turner to Nottingham Forest and are now expected to save a further £27 million following negotiations with Brentford regarding David Raya.

After reaching an agreement with Brentford for goalkeeper David Raya, Arsenal will conclude their fourth signing of the summer.

Raya was anticipated to join Arsenal permanently for approximately £30 million, but the Gunners have reached a slightly different agreement with him.

The North London club will instead acquire Raya on loan with an option to purchase.

They will pay an initial loan fee of £3 million, with the option to make the transfer permanent for £27 million next summer.

However, this is merely an option and not a requirement, and Brentford and Raya have consented to a contract extension in the event that Arsenal does not exercise this option.

The 27-year-old’s contract with the Bees had entered its final year. On Thursday, he will undertake a physical examination with Arsenal.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta desires to sign Raya as competition for Aaron Ramsdale.

Inaki Cana, Arteta’s trusted goalkeeping coach, is a huge fan of the defender, having worked with him at Brentford, and Raya has previously praised the influence he had on his career.

“He [Cana] helped me loads,” Raya stated in 2021.

“He’s a completely different character on the pitch, he’s very hardworking, very tough, and I think every goalkeeper who’s worked from him will tell you the same. You learn a lot, he puts you on your toes all the time, and he never lets you go down a level.”

The Gunners must register him by noon on Friday in order for him to be eligible for Saturday’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest.

As a consequence, Arsenal is saving money that could be used to acquire additional players this summer.

David Raya has agreed to transfer from Brentford to Arsenal.

In addition, they have already cleared the way for Raya’s arrival after selling reserve goalkeeper Matt Turner to Forest for £10 million.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we would like to thank Matt for his contribution to Arsenal and wish him and his family all the best in their new chapter,” the club’s sporting director Edu said after Turner’s exit was confirmed.

“Matt is an international goalkeeper with the United States and is at a stage of his career when he needs to be playing regularly. He is leaving with our best wishes to join Nottingham Forest.”

Turner added: “When I heard that there was interest to bring me here, it just felt right for my family, it felt right when my agent spoke to me about it and it feels like the right move for me right now.

“The manager and the backroom staff, everything about the club has a little sparkle to it.”
