Arsenal vs Barcelona pre-season friendly now in doubt… what we know so far

The status of Arsenal’s pre-season friendly against Barcelona has become uncertain due to the cancellation of Barcelona’s match against Juventus.

The La Liga champions had to call off their game against Juventus in California as some of their players are dealing with viral gastroenteritis. The official Twitter account of Barcelona shared this information.

“FC Barcelona hereby informs that the game against Juventus FC, scheduled for today, July 22 at 7:30 PM at Levi’s Stadium, as part of the Soccer Champions Tour, has been cancelled.

“A significant part of the Blaugrana squad has a viral gastroenteritis.” Considering Arsenal are due to face Xavi’s side in the early hours of Thursday morning, it remains to be seen whether or not the unwell players will recover by then.

Xavi’s words come back to haunt him

Speaking prior all the way back in 2015, the former Spanish midfield general asserted to BTV: “In the football world, when someone says they have gastroenteritis, it sounds like an excuse. When you hear someone has gastroenteritis, you immediately think there’s more to it than that.”

Xavi’s remarks during the summer, following Barcelona’s recent Champions League victory, occurred three days after Lionel Messi decided not to participate in an open-doors training session. Nevertheless, Xavi did not explicitly state whether his comments were related to this particular incident.

Adding that he felt that there was a solution to the issue in question, Xavi said: “If you have a stomach problem, you take a pill and then go out and play. Joint pains are the worst”.

Arsenal confident Barcelona friendly will go ahead despite fears over illness

Despite a recent illness outbreak in the Barcelona camp, Arsenal remains entirely confident that their pre-season friendly with Barcelona will proceed as scheduled in LA.

The Gunners have maintained close communication with Barcelona and remain convinced that the match will proceed as planned. The game is scheduled for Saturday, July 26th, at SoFi Stadium, with a kick-off time of 19:30 local time.

As part of their tour of the United States, Mikel Arteta’s team is eager to end on a positive note by returning to their winning form. In their first pre-season match, they suffered a 2-0 loss to Manchester United at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. After the game, Arteta acknowledged that he anticipates a challenging encounter against Barcelona.

“You asked me yesterday about how difficult or easy the season will be,” the Spaniard said. “It’s going to be more difficult, more challenging. The level and the preparation of every team is excellent. We knew today. They played two games before this one. We knew that the test was going to be really demanding just as it will be on Wednesday against one of the best teams in the world.”
