Barcelona’s Ilkay Gundogan expressed that settling into the club has been relatively smooth for him.

He also highlighted the resemblances between the football style at Barcelona and what he was accustomed to during his time at Manchester City.

Gundogan pointed out that the influence of Guardiola’s early tactics at Barcelona and his subsequent impact on Xavi Hernandez, who played under Guardiola and was later managed by him for four seasons, is clearly visible. This observation was shared by Gundogan in an interview with MD.

“You can see that it is the same school, that Pep had an influence on Xavi and his game. Of course, also the Barca school: possession, not losing the ball, trying to create, playing intelligently, finding space… many of the things we do here are similar to what we did at City with Pep and that also gives me an advantage, it’s easier to adapt.”

In his conversation with Sport, Gundogan expressed his ambition to achieve ultimate success with Barcelona. He revealed that his decision to join the club was motivated by their prestigious history and the special place they had held in his heart throughout the years.

“I remember a moment that I will never forget, which is Ronaldinho’s performance at the Bernabeu, where even the Real Madrid fans applauded him. I really enjoyed watching that. Not just Ronaldinho. All of Barca as a team playing that day.

“That is perhaps the most important moment I remember. But I have seen many games in the League or in the Champions League where the midfield of Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta, who for me was the best in the world, played in an incredible way and I grew up learning from them.”

Gundogan was asked to sum up some of his coaches in just one word. For his former coach at Borussia Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp, he chose the word ‘intensity’. Thomas Tuchel, who succeeded Klopp, was described as ‘intelligent’. As for Pep Guardiola, Gundogan praised him as a ‘genius’.

In an upcoming match between Barcelona and Arsenal, Gundogan will encounter one of his former coaches, Mikel Arteta. The game, which is their first preseason friendly, was initially scheduled against Juventus, but it had to be canceled due to a virus-related issue.
