Ben Jacobs reveals why Jordan Henderson changed his mind over potential Liverpool exit

Ben Jacobs has disclosed the reasons behind Jordan Henderson’s rejection of an initial offer from Al-Ettifaq and his subsequent change of mind regarding a potential move to Saudi Arabia.

The Liverpool captain has verbally agreed to relocate to the Middle East, and discussions are ongoing between the clubs to determine the transfer fee.

Despite initially declining the move, Henderson had a change of heart after receiving a more attractive offer from Steven Gerrard’s team, influenced by non-monetary factors.

In his exclusive Daily Briefing column for CaughtOffside, Jacobs wrote: “Henderson actually rejected Al-Ettifaq’s first offer and told some within Liverpool’s senior hierarchy he was focused on the new season and felt staying would best aid his Euro 2024 chances.

“But Al-Ettifaq came back with an improved offer and Henderson now feels the game time they can offer is more beneficial than staying at Anfield.”

While skeptics may argue that Jordan Henderson’s main motivation for moving to Saudi Arabia is the substantial weekly salary of £700,000 (The Athletic), it is valid to express concerns about his diminishing playing time at Anfield.

Compared to the previous season, Henderson started six fewer Premier League games and played 529 fewer minutes in the last season (WhoScored). The signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this summer have intensified competition for a spot in the starting lineup.

It is possible that Henderson believes a lack of regular starts for Liverpool in the upcoming season could negatively impact his chances of representing England in Euro 2024, just as a move to Al-Ettifaq might. Therefore, he may have decided to prioritize what he considers best for his club career.

Until Henderson himself publicly discusses the potential transfer, speculation will abound regarding his ultimate decision and the reasoning behind it.

All eyes will be on Henderson as Liverpool takes part in their first pre-season friendly against Karlsruher on Wednesday, which will offer insights into his potential role during the upcoming campaign and whether he will remain at Anfield once the competitive matches begin next month.
