Brentford goalkeeper David Raya eyeing a move to Arsenal this summer as negotiations to join Bayern Munich hit a standstill

According to trustworthy transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, there are reports that Brentford’s goalkeeper, David Raya, is considering a transfer to Arsenal in the upcoming summer.

This comes as talks to join Bayern Munich have reached a deadlock.

The summer has been exceptionally busy at the Emirates Stadium, with both manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu working diligently behind-the-scenes to reinforce key areas of the squad.

To the delight of their fanbase, Arsenal has already completed three major signings. They secured the services of Germany international winger Kai Havertz from Chelsea for a fee of £65 million.

Additionally, they acquired versatile defender Jurrien Timber from Ajax for approximately £38 million. The biggest signing, however, was star midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham, for a club-record fee of £105 million.

Rice’s addition is expected to significantly bolster Arteta’s midfield, and the manager himself praised the player’s exceptional quality upon announcing his capture.

“We’re really happy that Declan is joining us,” said Arteta.

“He is a player with tremendous ability, who has been performing at a high level in the Premier League and for England for a number of seasons now. Declan is bringing undoubted quality to the club and he is an exceptional talent who has the potential to be very successful here.

“Declan has great experience in the Premier League at only 24 years old. He has captained a very good West Ham team and as we all saw, he recently lifted a European trophy. The responsibility and role he has taken on has been very impressive and we are really excited that he is joining us.”

Despite previous indications that Arsenal would be prioritizing player sales, surprising reports in the last two days suggest that the club is now actively seeking a new goalkeeper.

This information aligns with renowned reporter Romano’s latest updates on Twitter, where he has shared news about Arsenal’s interest in David Raya from Brentford.

It appears that the club’s transfer activity is still ongoing, despite already spending over £200 million on new signings.

“David Raya prefers Arsenal move over Bayern,” wrote the journalist.

“Deal depends on clubs now but Arsenal expected to bid soon in order to accelerate talks.

“Negotiations with Bayern are currently off after loan offered in the morning — not what player/Brentford wanted.”

According to WhoScored, David Raya was among Brentford’s standout players in the Premier League last season, delivering strong performances on a per 90-minute basis.

Notably, he played more league minutes than any other player in Thomas Frank’s squad, featuring in every single game throughout the 2022/2023 season (WhoScored).

Raya’s impressive performances caught the attention of the Spanish national team, and he received his first-ever call-up to the Spain squad last year.

Thomas Frank, Brentford’s manager, praised Raya’s “very aggressive” style of play, further highlighting the goalkeeper’s skill and contribution to the team.

“You can’t have a strong mentality if you don’t have any setbacks,” said Frank.

“I know setbacks are different to a lot of people, but his clear and obvious abilities in terms of playing with his feet, high position, very aggressive in terms of his positioning and going for crosses, he definitely deserves this.”

Indeed, if Arsenal successfully finalize a deal for David Raya, he would present himself as a highly capable contender for the Gunners’ number one goalkeeper position, alongside the current first-choice, Aaron Ramsdale. Raya’s impressive performances at Brentford and his aggressive playing style, as acknowledged by Thomas Frank, indicate that he could be a strong addition to Arsenal’s squad.
