Chelsea identify new goalkeeper target in Anatoliy Trubin after Man Utd open Andre Onana transfer talks

According to reports, Chelsea have included Anatoliy Trubin, the goalkeeper from Shakhtar Donetsk, in their list of potential summer transfers.

This comes as Manchester United intensify their pursuit of Andre Onana from Inter Milan. Initially, Mauricio Pochettino had shown interest in signing Onana, but the Champions League finalists raised the asking price significantly, with an initial valuation of over £60 million.

Inter Milan now appear willing to reconsider their position, but Chelsea have already made changes to their goalkeeper plans. It is expected that Mauricio Pochettino will continue with Kepa Arrizabalaga as the first-choice goalkeeper for the 2023/24 season. Therefore, Chelsea are in the market for a backup goalkeeper rather than a direct replacement, following Edouard Mendy’s transfer to Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea has set their sights on Anatoliy Trubin, the 21-year-old goalkeeper from Shakhtar Donetsk. There is optimism that a deal can be reached between the two parties during the summer transfer window.

Anatoliy Trubin, who is highly regarded as one of the top young goalkeeping talents in Europe, has an estimated value of approximately £19 million according to Transfermarkt.

Anatoliy Trubin’s performance for Shakhtar Donetsk this season has been outstanding, with 14 clean sheets in 28 Ukrainian Premier Liga matches. He has also made six appearances in the UEFA Champions League for the club. Trubin’s impressive breakthrough came in the 2020/21 season, and he has since earned seven caps for the Ukrainian national team.

Throughout his 94 senior appearances for Shakhtar, Trubin has kept a total of 39 clean sheets. This impressive track record has attracted interest from several clubs in the top-five leagues of Europe.

If Chelsea were to secure the signing of Trubin, the intention would be to provide competition and cover for Kepa Arrizabalaga, as the Spanish goalkeeper strives to solidify his position as the starting goalkeeper at the club.

Kepa Arrizabalaga regained his position as Chelsea’s No. 1 goalkeeper last season, taking over from Edouard Mendy, who faced multiple injuries, including a finger problem that required surgery in January. Chelsea is willing to continue with Arrizabalaga as their first-choice goalkeeper, under the condition that he continues to improve his game, which he showcased in his return to form last season.

In a sign of trust, former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard even entrusted Arrizabalaga with the captain’s armband in the team’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton towards the end of the season, despite the team’s overall poor performance during that period.

Additionally, Gabriel Slonina, who joined Chelsea from Chicago Fire in 2022, is also eager to make his mark at Stamford Bridge. However, he has yet to make an appearance for the senior team and is currently seeking an opportunity to showcase his skills at the club.

Manchester United remains optimistic about reaching an agreement with Inter Milan for the transfer of Andre Onana, whose valuation has reportedly decreased to approximately £50 million.

The Red Devils have taken the initiative to hold direct discussions with the player’s agent and Piero Ausilio, the sporting director of Inter Milan, in an effort to find a satisfactory resolution to the negotiations.

The uncertainty surrounding David de Gea’s future at Old Trafford raises concerns, and as a result, Erik ten Hag is interested in reuniting with his former Ajax goalkeeper.

While Onana has expressed his contentment at Inter, it is known that every player can be tempted by the right offer, and the Nerazzurri are gradually becoming more open to the possibility of selling him.

United also has alternative choices such as Diogo Costa from Porto.
