Chelsea: Robert Sanchez and Levi Colwill a dream pairing

Chelsea: Robert Sanchez and Levi Colwill a dream pairing

As Chelsea persistently pursue the signing of Moises Caicedo for Stamford Bridge, they have now turned their attention to a fresh target hailing from the southern coast.

Todd Boehly has included Robert Sanchez, the latest player from Brighton, in his never-ending shortlist.

As reported by The Athletic, Chelsea has made an offer for the Brighton goalkeeper. However, the response from the Seagulls is still pending, though discussions between the two clubs are still ongoing.

The reason for Chelsea’s pursuit of a goalkeeper is to reinforce the position following Edouard Mendy’s departure for Saudi Arabia earlier in the summer.

As of now, the future of the Spanish goalkeeper at the Amex Stadium seems to be beyond repair, as he has been supplanted as the first-choice by Jason Steele, and the club has additionally brought in Bart Verbrugge from Anderlecht to provide more options for Roberto De Zerbi.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Robert Sanchez has already agreed to move to Chelsea and is eager to join the club. Brighton appears to be anticipating a quick resolution to his departure.

How good is Robert Sanchez?

In February 2021, the towering 6 foot 6 goalkeeper committed to a new four-and-a-half-year contract with Brighton, solidifying his position as the clear first-choice goalkeeper for the team.

During his debut season in the top-flight football, despite playing in only 27 matches, Sanchez managed to keep ten clean sheets.

His clean sheet percentage of 37% surpassed that of renowned goalkeepers like Hugo Lloris, Bernd Leno, Allison, David de Gea, and Jordan Pickford, highlighting his exceptional performance and that of his defensive line.

Praised as a “monster” by Graham Potter, he carried his impressive form into the 2021/22 season, making the highest number of claims (60) in the league, proving his dominance as the club achieved their best-ever league finish, securing ninth place.

Potter continued to shower praise on Sanchez, emphasizing that he possesses not only size but also power and speed, making him a complete and top-class goalkeeper in terms of his attributes.

Following Graham Potter’s departure to Chelsea in September, and the arrival of De Zerbi as the new manager, Sanchez’s career at Brighton took a downturn. In the last 17 games of the season, he only started in one match, as Jason Steele became the clear first-choice goalkeeper.

De Zerbi reinforced the decision by stating that Sanchez’s style of play was not aligned with his preferences, further solidifying Steele’s position as the number one option.

Despite falling out of favor at Brighton, Sanchez remains a reliable and skilled goalkeeper, capable of providing healthy competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga at Chelsea. Potter has praised Sanchez as “amazing” for his ability to handle pressure and his composure on the ball.

These traits could prove valuable for Chelsea, particularly benefiting players like Levi Colwill, who shares the same kind of quality and composure. Despite the setback at Brighton, Sanchez’s attributes could still have a positive impact on Chelsea’s squad.

The young defender, Levi Colwill, is on the verge of signing a new six-year contract with the club, and his performances during pre-season have impressed Mauricio Pochettino. The coach expressed his delight, stating that Colwill has the potential to become one of the best center-backs in England.

Colwill’s standout quality lies in his technical abilities, setting him apart from other players in his position. He ranks in the top 8% in Europe’s top-five leagues for progressive passes per 90 and in the best 12% for progressive carries per 90.

With Colwill and Sanchez now part of a revamped Chelsea backline, Pochettino believes he may have discovered the solution to elevate the club from its previous mediocrity.

Colwill’s potential would have been difficult to notice if Kepa had continued to struggle with error-prone displays. However, with the inclusion of Colwill and the stability he brings, a new era of consistency may be born at the heart of Chelsea’s defense.
