Chelsea starting lineup vs Brighton as Mauricio Pochettino unveils plan

Mauricio Pochettino plans to once again place his trust in the young talents within the Chelsea squad as they face Brighton at the Lincoln Field Stadium in Philadelphia during the Premier League Summer Series opener on Saturday.

Throughout the month, Chelsea will also have matches against Newcastle and Fulham.

During the last game, Chelsea fielded a team that consisted of seven players aged 20 or below, with six of them having never played for Chelsea’s senior team before.

Notably, Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Levi Colwill, and Noni Madueke were not even included in the squad. It appears that these players might have limited or no involvement in Saturday night’s match.

Pochettino emphasized his intention to utilize the entire squad during the pre-season tour. This means that he will give opportunities to both experienced players and young talents, ensuring everyone gets a chance to showcase their abilities and contribute to the team’s preparations for the upcoming season.

He said: “No, we’re going to mix also. Still we have players who need time to train, several like Enzo only arrived on Monday. After a long period of holidays. We play Brighton on Saturday. It’s not because we’re going to play a Premier League team I need to play with senior players.

“We need to care about the players, we need to provide the best tools for him to arrive in the best condition when we start the Premier League. I am going to continue the young players the possibility to play on Saturday and the next few games.”

The Blues have the option to switch goalkeepers in their upcoming match against Brighton, as they have Kepa Arrizabalaga and Eddie Beach as alternatives. Lucas Bergstrom is also eager for more playing time after Jamie Cumming started the last game against Wrexham.

Malo Gusto is expected to be in the starting lineup, considering that Reece James has recently arrived in the USA.

Trevoh Chalobah, who had a minor Achilles problem in the Wrexham match, might be on the bench. This could open the door for Thiago Silva to join the starting team if he is fit, while Bashir Humphreys is likely to retain his starting spot.

Lewis Hall and Conor Gallagher will be competing against Andrey Santos, Cesare Casadei, and Carney Chukwuemeka for positions in midfield. All three players showed promising performances in the game against Wrexham and will aim to strengthen their case before Fernandez returns.

Ian Maatsen is expected to be in the lineup once again, following his impressive brace in the match against North Carolina. Additionally, Angelo Gabriel might get a chance to start after making a significant impact in the second half of the previous game.

In the forward position, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku will be vying for a spot. The Senegal international may have an edge due to his well-rounded game, but Nkunku’s ability to find the net adds to the competition.

Predicted Chelsea XI: Kepa; Gusto, Silva, Humphreys, Chilwell, Santos, Casadei, Chukwuemeka; Angelo, Jackson, Maatsen.
