Chelsea to terminate Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract

According to information from Fabrizio Romano, it is expected that Chelsea will mutually terminate Cesar Azpilicueta’s contract as the right-back is nearing a move to Atletico Madrid. Romano, a reliable source for transfer news, also disclosed that Azpilicueta, who is a Spanish international, will be officially announced as an Atletico player in the upcoming days.

This transfer adds to the list of players sold by Chelsea as they aim to reduce the size of their squad, in preparation for Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival as the new manager next week.

Chelsea has already offloaded numerous players and now aims to begin signing their identified top targets during the summer transfer window.

After spending 12 years at Stamford Bridge, the 33-year-old Cesar Azpilicueta will be joining Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid as a free agent. Chelsea has decided to terminate his contract to allow the move to happen. Previously, Azpilicueta had turned down a move to Barcelona as Chelsea expressed their desire for him to stay, especially after the sales of Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid and Andreas Christensen to Barcelona.

During his time at Chelsea, Azpilicueta, who was signed from Marseille for £7 million, made over 500 appearances for the club, showcasing his versatility by playing in multiple positions across the defense. He contributed to the team’s success, winning Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup, a Club World Cup, two Europa Leagues, and a Champions League.

His leadership qualities and winning mentality on the field will be cherished, as players like him, who remain fully committed to a club during uncertain times, are rare in modern sports. Now Chelsea will be searching for their next captain, with Thiago Silva and Reece James among the potential candidates due to their leadership abilities.

The presence of Malo Gusto, who was signed during the winter transfer window, provides reassurance as a potential replacement for Azpilicueta in the upcoming season at Chelsea. Azpilicueta, however, still retains his quality and will be a valuable addition to Simeone’s defensively-oriented team at Atletico Madrid.

Moving to a team in his home country gives Azpilicueta the opportunity to compete in the UEFA Champions League next season, where he has a real chance of securing regular playing time. This move seems to be an ideal option for him, especially considering his unsuccessful move to Barcelona in the recent past.
