Al-Nassr, the club Cristiano Ronaldo plays for, has made a move to acquire Andre Onana, who is a highly sought-after transfer target for Manchester United

Since the future of United goalkeeper David de Gea remains uncertain after his contract expired, the team has engaged in discussions with Inter Milan about signing Onana.

The goalkeeper previously worked with United boss Erik ten Hag during their time at Ajax. However, according to Mirror Football’s report last Saturday, United officials consider the 27-year-old Cameroonian to be too costly due to his price tag of £60 million.

Ten Hag has limited funds for summer spending, with approximately £120 million at his disposal before factoring in player sales. A significant portion of that budget has already been allocated to signing Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, who underwent a medical examination on Monday. Inter Milan, facing financial constraints, are eager to offload Onana in order to raise funds for a potential deal involving Romelu Lukaku.

In response to this situation, Al-Nassr, Ronaldo’s club, has entered the competition to secure Onana’s services, seeking to add him to the list of high-profile players moving to Saudi Arabia this summer. Al-Nassr has publicly expressed their interest, and the goalkeeper’s representatives have been informed about the club’s intentions, as first reported by the Italian publication Calciomercato.

If Al-Nassr successfully signs Onana, Ten Hag will miss out on his preferred choice to replace De Gea, who is currently engaged in discussions with United regarding a new contract but appears to be moving closer to leaving the club after being there for 12 years.

Onana, despite the opportunity to be Ronaldo’s teammate, is uncertain about relocating to Saudi Arabia at the moment. This hesitation is likely influenced by his exceptional season with Inter Milan.

It is worth noting that Ronaldo and Ten Hag have a history of discord, as they had a falling out during the first half of the previous season, resulting in Ronaldo leaving Manchester for Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. In an infamous interview with Piers Morgan, just days before United terminated his contract, Ronaldo alleged that Ten Hag and the club’s leadership were pressuring him to leave.

“I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner added. “If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.”

If Ronaldo managed to persuade Onana to join him at Al-Nassr, it would undoubtedly exacerbate the tension between Ronaldo and Ten Hag.

However, Ten Hag has already prepared backup options in case Onana’s move falls through. He has identified Kevin Trapp from Eintracht Frankfurt and Justin Bijlow from Feyenoord as potential candidates for the goalkeeper position and included them on his shortlist.

Indeed, both Trapp and Bijlow would likely be more affordable options compared to Onana, making them more feasible targets for Ten Hag at the moment.

According to the mentioned report, officials from Manchester United have met with their counterparts from Inter Milan in Ibiza. However, United has not yet submitted a formal offer due to Inter’s valuation of £60 million for Onana.

Ten Hag is now under pressure to secure a top goalkeeper before the start of the 2023-24 season, as Manchester United’s Premier League campaign kicks off on Monday, August 14, with a home match against Wolves. Time is ticking for him to find his preferred number one goalkeeper.
