Erik ten Hag blocks Tom Heaton’s move to Luton Town as doubts loom over David de Gea’s future

Reports suggest that Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has prevented Tom Heaton from joining Luton Town. This decision comes amidst uncertainty surrounding the future of David de Gea.

It is reported that Ten Hag turned down Heaton’s request to be transferred following unsuccessful contract negotiations between United and De Gea.

According to the Telegraph, Tom Heaton, who is 37 years old, expressed his desire to leave Manchester United after activating a one-year extension in his contract. He wants to be a first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League.

However, Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United manager, rejected Heaton’s request because he might need him as the main goalkeeper for the upcoming season. It is anticipated that both David de Gea and Dean Henderson will not remain at the club.

The report indicates that Manchester United withdrew their contract offer to De Gea, which means he is likely to leave the club as a free agent at midnight on Friday.

On the other hand, Henderson, who has already returned to Carrington for injury rehabilitation, seems destined to permanently join Nottingham Forest after spending the previous season on loan at the City Ground.

Ten Hag’s decision to block Heaton’s potential move to Luton Town implies that he is preparing for the departure of both De Gea and Henderson.

In 2021, Tom Heaton, who originally came through Manchester United’s academy, returned to the club. He signed a two-year contract with the possibility of extending it for a third year.

Initially, it was not anticipated that Manchester United would extend the stay of Tom Heaton, who serves as the third-choice goalkeeper. However, the circumstances surrounding David de Gea may have influenced a change of decision by the club.

If De Gea doesn’t sign a new contract by the end of the week, his time as a player for United will come to an end, marking the conclusion of his 12-year career at Old Trafford.

Throughout his first season as the manager of United, there have been persistent doubts about whether De Gea fits the preferred style of Ten Hag, causing concerns for the entire season.

Speculation about De Gea being replaced as the first-choice goalkeeper intensified due to a series of high-profile errors, including his most recent performance in the FA Cup final loss to Manchester City.

United was prepared to offer De Gea a new contract with reduced terms compared to his current salary of £375,000 per week. However, Ten Hag, the United manager, could not assure De Gea of a starting role in the upcoming season. This uncertainty seemingly contributed to De Gea’s reluctance to extend his stay beyond the summer, as indicated by his camp.

Reports suggest that United is in discussions with Inter Milan regarding the potential signing of Andre Onana as a replacement for De Gea. Ten Hag is familiar with Onana from their time together at Ajax.
