Gareth Bale surprisingly names former Manchester City star Micah Richards as the toughest right-back he ever faced

Gareth Bale considers Micah Richards, a former Manchester City defender, to be the most challenging right-back he has encountered throughout his career.

Despite facing top defenders while playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid, Richards made a lasting impression on the Welsh football legend.

During his playing days, Gareth Bale faced Micah Richards five times, with four encounters while playing for Tottenham Hotspur and one match against Southampton.

In those games, Bale scored one goal and did not provide any assists. Unfortunately, his team suffered three defeats and managed to secure only one victory.

When asked to identify the most challenging right-back he encountered, Bale revealed in an interview with The Times, as reported by GOAL.

“The hardest right back I played against was Micah Richards. I was a bit quicker but he was an athlete, so strong and holding. I’d knock it round him but he just [leans across and] goes ‘no!”

Richards was highly regarded as one of the top right-backs during his prime. He possessed remarkable speed and was difficult to overpower in one-on-one battles.

After spending an impressive 14 years with Manchester City, he moved to Aston Villa in 2015. Richards ultimately retired from professional football in 2019 and currently serves as a pundit.

He is widely considered as one of Manchester City’s best defenders in the 21st century, having made 246 appearances for the club and winning two Premier League titles.

On the other hand, Gareth Bale, aged 33, decided to end his football career in January 2023.
