Levi Colwill’s new wages compared to Reece James, Enzo Fernandez and Chelsea squad

Levi Colwill’s future has been a significant subplot during Chelsea’s hectic transfer window, but the young defender’s fate has finally been decided.

Last season, the 20-year-old showed promise while on loan at Brighton under Roberto De Zerbi, helping the Seagulls secure Europa League qualification.

In contrast, Chelsea struggled under Frank Lampard, finishing in a disappointing 12th position.

However, with Mauricio Pochettino now managing the team, he has big plans for Chelsea’s young talents, including Colwill.

As a result, the defender has committed his future to Stamford Bridge by signing a new six-year contract, with the option for an additional season.

It’s worth noting that Colwill’s new contract comes with an updated salary, though it might not be as extravagant as some of his Chelsea teammates, who are earning astronomical wages.

During the 2022/23 season, Colwill’s earnings were relatively low as it was his first experience in top-flight football. He had spent the previous season with Huddersfield. Under his old contract, which was set to expire in 2025, he was earning a modest £5,000 a week.

However, with his new contract, Colwill’s salary has seen a substantial increase, now reaching £100,000 a week. This places him in a higher earning bracket, getting closer to established footballers like Romelu Lukaku, Raheem Sterling, and Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea’s extravagant spending has been extensively documented ever since Todd Boehly took over last year. They have brought in numerous players and let go of many others as they aim to rebuild following an early end to Thomas Tuchel’s reign and an embarrassing 31-game stint under Graham Potter.

Recently, they have acquired promising young talents like Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Christopher Nkunku, rewarding them generously with lucrative contracts. Colwill’s new deal significantly boosts his weekly wage into a six-digit figure, joining other well-paid players in the Chelsea squad.

Over the past two decades, Chelsea has been a dominant force in the Premier League, thanks to the substantial wealth of their former owner Roman Abramovich. This financial strength allowed them to pay considerable amounts to stars such as Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, and John Terry during the club’s peak.

Colwill’s weekly earnings of £100,000 now put him on the same level as teammates like Carney Chukwuemeka, Mudryk, and Hakim Ziyech, as per Spotrac. However, he still falls short compared to top earners like Lukaku, Sterling, and Fernandez.

Although Lukaku’s reported £325,000-a-week salary since his return in 2021 hasn’t been fully justified by his performances, the investment in Colwill is expected to pay off in the long run. It ensures that the promising defender remains at Stamford Bridge for many years and proves to be a much more worthwhile expense.
