Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag sanctions three exits because of Kobbie Mainoo plan

Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has approved three departures during this summer as part of his strategy to develop young talent, particularly focusing on 18-year-old prodigy Kobbie Mainoo.

Last season, Ten Hag gave Mainoo the opportunity to make his debut for the team, and recently, he even included him in the starting lineup for a pre-season friendly in New Jersey, where Manchester United secured a 2-0 victory against Arsenal.

Mainoo has been associated with Manchester United’s academy since he was not even nine years old, and in 2022, he was the second youngest player to be part of the team that won the FA Youth Cup.

Since taking over as the manager at Old Trafford last summer, Erik ten Hag has been greatly impressed by Mainoo’s skills as a midfielder. He demonstrated his faith in the young talent by giving him a starting position in the team during the Carabao Cup quarter-final victory against Charlton in January.

ESPN reports that two other academy graduates, Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage, have been permitted to leave Manchester United during this summer transfer window.

This decision was partly influenced by the fact that Mainoo’s development and progress were ahead of them. Moreover, there are indications that Ten Hag is willing to consider offers for another midfielder, Fred, which suggests that he sees Mainoo as a potential replacement for the Brazilian international.

Zidane Iqbal made just one appearance for Manchester United’s first team before signing a permanent deal with Dutch club FC Utrecht. On the other hand, Charlie Savage, the son of former United player Robbie Savage, joined Reading, a team in League One.

Last week, there was a commercial event taking place at a hotel in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, where Kobbie Mainoo was supposed to make an appearance in front of the media.

However, the young talent was eventually kept away from the media, and as a result, Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United manager, was questioned about Mainoo and his absence from the media session.

The excitement surrounding the teenager has been steadily growing, making him a topic of significant interest. “He gets his chance because he deserves it,” the ex-Ajax boss explained. “He showed a high level and now he has to show it in games. So pre-season is perfect to test him. He is an option to get into the game squad and to get play time. We will see, but I am confident he can do it and we have to wait and test if it is going to happen.”

During his appearance against Arsenal, Kobbie Mainoo displayed great composure and confidence, even when facing experienced players like Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Martin Odegaard.

He showed remarkable poise in finding spaces on the field to receive passes from his defensive teammates. Additionally, Mainoo played an essential role in setting up Bruno Fernandes’ opening goal, showcasing his ability to contribute to the team’s attacking plays. Despite his young age, Mainoo demonstrated maturity and skill on the pitch during the match against Arsenal.

And following the match, Fernandes was full of praise for the starlet as he told reporters: “He’s a great player. He’s good on the ball, strong, he can defend and attack. He’s still pretty young but we see a bright future for him.”
