Man Utd decide stance on permanent Jonny Evans transfer after star’s surprise return

Reports suggest that Manchester United is affording Jonny Evans an opportunity to secure a lasting position at the club. Following his participation in the match against Lyon on Wednesday, the Northern Irishman will be involved in the pre-season activities.

In a surprising move earlier this week, Manchester United re-signed Jonny Evans on a temporary contract. The three-time Premier League winner had previously been training with the under-21s to keep himself in shape following his departure from Leicester.

During the previous season, Evans was unfortunate to miss a significant portion of it due to injury, which coincided with Leicester’s relegation to the Championship.

While he awaited a firm offer for the current season, Manchester United stepped in and offered him a chance to join the team.

During the 1-0 triumph against Lyon in Edinburgh, Jonny Evans made a substitute appearance, coming off the bench at half-time. As part of his continued involvement with Manchester United, he will be joining an academy squad on their trip to San Diego.

In San Diego, the squad, primarily composed of young players, will face Wrexham on Tuesday.

According to The Telegraph’s report, Manchester United is planning to offer Evans further opportunities, while there is a possibility of Harry Maguire departing the club due to losing the captaincy.

Consequently, Erik ten Hag’s squad would rely on Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof as their center-back options, with Eric Bailly also expected to leave.

In case Maguire does leave, United has not dismissed the idea of signing Evans for a more extended contract.

This summer, Manchester United is operating with limited funds, making it necessary for Erik ten Hag to focus on reinforcing both the goalkeeping and attacking positions.

In this context, Evans presents an attractive option due to his affordability and wealth of experience, providing a suitable solution to fill the gap in the squad.

On Wednesday, Erik ten Hag clarified the rationale behind considering the re-signing of Evans.

He highlighted Evans’ history with Manchester United, where he initially emerged from the academy and spent an impressive eight years in the first team from 2007 to 2015.

During his tenure with the club, the Red Devils achieved significant success, securing three Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and two League Cups.

Given his familiarity with the club and the valuable experience he brings, Evans has become a compelling option for rejoining the squad under the current circumstances.

He said: “I know him for a long time, so I know his place was here, in Manchester.

“He came to train with us, to work on his fitness, and when I said: yeah, not all the players are in – internationals are out, still having their break, so I thought it was a good idea to help each other out. Jonny can work on his fitness and he can help us out.

“The level, we know he is a really experienced player but also a very good person, a big personality, and I think he has big authority as well. He will help the young players especially. It is a benefit for both sides.”
