Man Utd told to make Jonny Evans captain as defender has something rest of squad don’t have

Just moments after his return to Manchester United, fans are already urging for Jonny Evans to be made captain. The experienced defender surprised everyone with his comeback to Old Trafford, having signed a temporary contract to participate in the club’s pre-season tour.

With the recent decision of stripping Harry Maguire of the captaincy, manager Erik ten Hag is anticipated to announce a new first team captain soon.

While Bruno Fernandes is seen as the frontrunner for the position, fans on social media strongly believe that Evans is a more suitable candidate, citing a crucial reason.

“Jonny Evans is the only player in the squad with a Premier League winners’ medal. He’s the undisputed king of the dressing room now, give him the armband,” one supporter tweeted.

“They should make Evans captain, he knows how to win the Prem unlike those other losers,” a rival fan added.

Another commented: “Jokes that Evans can stroll around the squad flashing his Prem medal at everyone haha,” while a third said: “Jonny Evans being the most decorated Premier League player in that dressing room is giving me the giggles.”

At the beginning of the last season, Manchester United had two Premier League winners in their squad, namely Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea. However, both players have since left the club.

During the short period between David de Gea’s departure and Jonny Evans’ arrival, Manchester United found themselves without a single player who had won the Premier League or the First Division in their ranks.

This situation marked the first time since 1992 that the Red Devils did not have any Premier League/First Division winners among their squad members.

Jonny Evans had a notable career at Manchester United, making nearly 200 appearances for the club during his initial spell. He began his journey at the club’s academy in 2006 and went on loan for a couple of seasons before finally establishing himself as a semi-regular player in Sir Alex Ferguson’s team around 2008.

After departing Manchester United in 2015, Jonny Evans moved to West Brom and then to Leicester City three years later. He had consistent playing time at both clubs.

However, following the expiration of his contract, he left Leicester in June, just a month after the team’s relegation to the Championship.

Currently, the 36-year-old is anticipated to train with Manchester United’s U21 squad in the coming weeks while he contemplates his next career move.

Remarkably, Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff have been extremely impressed with Evans’ performances during training. As a result, they are now considering him for selection in the upcoming first team friendlies.
