Mikel Arteta says Granit Xhaka personally told him he wanted to leave Arsenal

According to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, Granit Xhaka personally informed him of his intention to depart from the Gunners during the summer transfer period.

Arteta revealed in an interview with Arsenal’s official website that Xhaka expressed his desire to leave the North London club. The Swiss midfielder subsequently completed a move to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Sky Sports reported that Bayer Leverkusen paid Arsenal £21.4 million in transfer fees to secure the services of Xhaka.

Mikel Arteta on Granit Xhaka’s departure from Arsenal

Arteta said about Xhaka’s departure: “There are three parts to this – he had a very clear desire that it was the right time and a big opportunity for him personally to move there.

“We had that conversation and in the end, we all agreed that it was the right thing to move forward.”

If Granit Xhaka expressed his personal desire to leave Arsenal during the summer transfer window, it can be argued that the club made the right decision to sell him.

While Xhaka performed brilliantly for Arsenal last season, it is possible that he felt he had achieved all he could for the Gunners. Additionally, at the age of 30, he may have considered it an opportune time to pursue new challenges.

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal is reportedly close to securing the signing of Declan Rice from West Ham United, suggesting that manager Mikel Arteta already has a replacement for Xhaka lined up.

Although Xhaka had his ups and downs during his time at Arsenal, he significantly contributed to the club’s success last season, helping them secure a second-place finish in the Premier League. Arsenal is likely to acknowledge his dedication and efforts on the pitch throughout his tenure at the club.
