Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is ‘open’ to signing additional players before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Timber substitute affirms definitive transfer decision despite Arsenal and Manchester United interest

Arsenal’s chances of replacing Jurrien Timber with Benjamin Pavard have taken a major hit. The 22-year-old defender, who recently joined the Gunners from Ajax, has suffered a serious knee injury that is anticipated to sideline him for some time.

Timber went down clutching his right knee at the conclusion of the first half of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest.

After undergoing treatment, he returned to the field for the second half, but Takehiro Tomiyasu quickly replaced him.

After multiple examinations and further evaluations, the north London club determined that Timber had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Arsenal confirmed in an official statement that the Dutch international would undergo surgery and be ‘out of action for a period of time’ as a consequence.

With Timber expected to miss a significant portion of the season, Mikel Arteta began searching for a suitable replacement.

According to the Metro, the Gunners contemplated a move for Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard.

According to the report, the Red Devils are also interested in the 27-year-old, but they cannot afford a bid after failing to transfer Harry Maguire.

Ironically, United have been searching for a versatile defender ever since Arsenal signed Timber before them.

Pavard’s contract at the Allianz Arena expires at the conclusion of the upcoming season, rendering him available for a reduced fee of €30 million (£25.7 million).

Nevertheless, despite the increasingly uncertain future of the France international, Bayern has decided that he will remain, according to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The Bundesliga champions’ decision follows Thomas Tuchel’s assertion that Benjamin Pavard has a future with the club.

Thursday at a press conference, the former Chelsea manager stated:

“Benji hasn’t communicated to me that he really wants to leave. As of now, there hasn’t been an offer. He’s our player and gets full support. Until that changes, we’re fully counting on him.”

With Pavard expected to remain with Bayern, Arsenal has just over a week to replace Timber.

Arteta disclosed to the press on Thursday how the Gunners will handle the absence of the Dutchman.

“We did not plan for this injury so we have to assess now what the options, the best way to get the best out of the players that we have,” said the Spaniard. “Because, as I stated, my biggest challenge now is to get the best out of the players that we have.

“I cannot control anything that is not here and we are open and we have to be open to reacting if something happens. Not only with injuries but in the market as well and that is what we are doing.”
