Pep Guardiola issues Kevin De Bruyne injury update ahead of new season

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Kevin De Bruyne is nearing a return to the first-team lineup, having missed Manchester City‘s 5-3 friendly victory over Yokohama F Marinos on Sunday.

De Bruyne, who was present on the bench but didn’t play, observed as the Citizens began their pre-season preparations with an eventful win in Tokyo. This victory came six weeks after their historic treble triumph, defeating Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League final.

During the Champions League final, the 31-year-old suffered a grade three hamstring tear in the first half, raising concerns that he might not recover in time for the start of the 2023-24 season.

Nevertheless, Guardiola has now given some comforting news to Manchester City supporters, indicating that De Bruyne’s recovery progress is positive, and there is a possibility he may make an appearance during their pre-season tour of Asia.

Speaking to mancity.com about De Bruyne’s condition after the win over Yokohama F Marinos, Guardiola said: “He feels much, much much better.

“I don’t know about Bayern Munich or the next game against Atletico [Madrid] because he has to train, but he is so close to being back.”

De Bruyne has been a crucial member of the Manchester City first-team for several years, contributing significantly with 96 goals and 152 assists in a total of 356 matches, including an impressive tally of 10 goals and 28 assists across all competitions in the last season.

Looking ahead, Manchester City has an exciting schedule. They are set to face Bundesliga champions Bayern next Wednesday in Tokyo, followed by a match against Atletico in Seoul four days later. These fixtures promise to be exciting encounters for both the team and the fans.
