Pep Guardiola responds to claims Man City blocked Barcelona from signing Joao Cancelo

Pep Guardiola has refuted Xavi’s allegations that Manchester City prevented Joao Cancelo’s transfer to Barcelona during the January transfer window. Cancelo departed from Etihad Stadium in January due to a disagreement with Guardiola and subsequently joined Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

Xavi disclosed in an interview with Catalan broadcaster TV3 last month that Barcelona had expressed interest in acquiring the services of the Portuguese full-back.

According to Xavi, Barcelona received an offer for Cancelo, but they were subsequently informed that Manchester City had exercised their veto power and blocked the transfer to the La Liga club.

“We wanted Cancelo. They offered him to us and we gave the ok,” Xavi said.

“In the end they told us that Manchester City do not want him to come to Barca.

“That is true.”

Guardiola, who had previously coached Xavi during their time at Barcelona, declined to criticize his former player when questioned about Xavi’s remarks regarding Cancelo. Speaking in Catalonia, the Manchester City manager refuted the claim that his club had obstructed Cancelo’s transfer to Barcelona.

“He has been misinformed,” Guardiola said, as per Sport.

“He is far from reality. We decided that Joao had to leave and we didn’t care where, as if he wanted to go to Manchester United, who are the city rivals.

“I’m not saying Xavi was lied to, but I’m saying he was misinformed.

“Joao went to Bayern because Bayern wanted him. We didn’t get an offer from Barca.”
