Revealed: Why Manchester United have made Mason Mount their new No.7

During their pre-transfer discussions, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag made an offer to Mason Mount to wear the number seven jersey.

This gesture from Ten Hag signifies the significance United places on Mount and the pivotal role he is expected to play in the team. Mount’s acceptance of the number seven makes him the tenth player at United to don this iconic jersey since fixed squad numbers were introduced in 1993.

Previously, Alejandro Garnacho was being considered for the number, which became available after Cristiano Ronaldo left in November. It is worth noting that fans were unable to purchase a home shirt with “Garnacho 49” printed on it last week.

By wearing this legendary number, Mount joins the ranks of esteemed United players like George Best and Bryan Robson.

On Wednesday, Mason Mount finalized his transfer from Chelsea to Manchester United and committed to a five-year contract with the possibility of an additional year.

The number seven jersey at Manchester United holds significant historical significance. After Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona took on the iconic number during his first full season with the club in 1993-94. Following Cantona’s sudden retirement in 1997, David Beckham inherited the number.

Beckham eventually departed for Real Madrid in 2003, and it was during that same summer that Manchester United acquired Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo wore the number seven jersey in two separate stints with the club. However, the number seemed to carry a curse after Ronaldo’s departure in 2009, which saw him leave for a world-record transfer to Madrid.

The acquisition of the number seven jersey by Michael Owen in 2009 was met with controversy, given his previous association with Liverpool. Unfortunately, Owen’s tenure at Manchester United was plagued by injuries, and he managed to score only 17 goals over three seasons.

Antonio Valencia took on the number seven in 2012 but had a woeful performance, leading him to request a return to his previous squad number of 25 after just one season.

Angel di Maria, Memphis Depay, and Alexis Sanchez were three high-profile signings who all failed to live up to expectations while wearing the number seven jersey at United. They were considered expensive disappointments.

Edinson Cavani, who arrived at United on the deadline day in October 2020, proved to be an inconsistent squad member, which raised doubts about his suitability for the number seven.

Following the start of the 2021-22 season, Manchester United obtained special permission to reassign the number seven jersey from Cavani to Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Ronaldo’s second spell with the club ended on a sour note when he conducted an unauthorized interview and expressed a lack of respect for manager Erik ten Hag.
