What happened in Steven Gerrard’s first game as Al Ettifaq manager in Saudi Arabia

Steven Gerrard, in his debut match as the manager of Saudi Pro League Al Ettifaq, experienced heartbreaking disappointment when his team conceded a goal in injury time, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Last week, Gerrard accepted the position after initially turning down their offer in June.

He conducted interviews and traveled to Croatia with his coaching staff for their first training camp. In their inaugural friendly match against Slovenian team Aluminij, Gerrard utilized the opportunity to have two different line-ups play in each half, with mixed results.

The first half team, featuring Robin Quaison, a former Mainz striker, and Marcel Tisserand, a former Wolfsburg defender, managed to score the opening goal in the 40th minute.

Tisserand, unmarked in the 18-yard box, brilliantly headed in Muhammad Al-Kuwaikibi’s corner.

Despite Ettifaq’s continued dominance and a missed chance by Ibrahim Mahnashi that could have sealed the victory, they failed to secure the win as Jakov Katusa equalized for Aluminij in the 91st minute.

Gerrard has expressed his interest in bringing Jordan Henderson, his successor as Liverpool captain, to Al Ettifaq for the upcoming Saudi season, which starts on August 11.

Reports suggest that Henderson has been offered nearly four times his Liverpool salary to make the move to the Middle East. However, Liverpool has not yet received an official offer for their captain.
